MANILA/BANSALAN, Davao del Sur, Philippines -- One person drowned, two others including a child were reported missing, while 169 families were evacuated after a river overflowed in Bansalan town, Davao del Sur province, causing flash floods on Thursday, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said. The fatality was identified as Victor Boyo, 30, a laborer at the town’s public market according to Inspector Emelix Mabalot, town police chief. Mabalot said a woman and a child were also reported missing. Heavy rains caused the Miral river to overflow and flood sitio (sub-village) Bugac and Poblacion 2 village, the NDCC said in a report on Friday The evacuees were brought to the municipal gymnasium of Bansalan, the report said. Mayor Edwin Reyes said about 500 families were affected when the flashflood hit Poblacion 2 around 5:30 p.m. The flood, which also destroyed a wooden bridge, broke out amid fair weather in this town late Thursday afternoon, officials said Friday. There was a report of a water spout but the occurrence remains unverified. |
